Ernie Hudson said Ghostbusters: Afterlife will finally reveal more about Winston Zeddemore’s backstory, making him a ‘complete character.’
Ghostbusters: Afterlife will explore the backstory for Ernie Hudson’s character, Winston Zeddemore.
The role of Winston was originally written for Eddie Murphy but was scaled down after Murphy had to pass due to his commitment to Beverly Hills Cop. “We don’t know a damn thing about Winston [in Ghostbusters (1984)],” Hudson pointed out on the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast. “With Bill Murray, we see him in his little studio, or [Dan Aykroyd] in his little lab, we get a sense of what is outside of what we’re seeing. But with Winston, he’s just there. He just pops up.”

An earlier draft of the Ghostbusters script revealed Winston was a seasoned member of the U.S. Air Force before his screen time was reduced shortly before shooting began. “Basically, instead of coming in page eight, he came in at page 68,” Hudson said. “All the backstory where I come in and we talk about who I am and I’m auditioning and explaining what I do, he just says, ‘If there’s a steady paycheck in it, I’ll believe anything you say.’ I find that a funny line, but you don’t get to know who this guy is. It’s a funny bit, but unfortunately, it doesn’t give you a lot to play. So as an actor, you have to bring all of that with you, and hopefully, people will see it.”
Ghostbusters: Afterlife will pick up in the present day, following a single mother (Carrie Coon) and her two kids (Finn Wolfhard and Mckenna Grace) as they move to a small town in Oklahoma and discover their secret connection to the original Ghostbusters. Hudson will reprise his role as Winston for the film, returning alongside his costars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts. When asked if Afterlife includes an actual backstory for Winston, Hudson replied “Yep! Yep, thanks to [director] Jason Reitman. Winston is definitely a complete character.”
From director Jason Reitman and producer Ivan Reitman, comes the next chapter in the original Ghostbusters universe. In Ghostbusters: Afterlife, when a single mom and her two kids arrive in a small town, they begin to discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind. The film is written by Jason Reitman & Gil Kenan.
Directed by Jason Reitman, Ghostbusters: Afterlife stars Finn Wolfhard, Carrie Coon, Paul Rudd and Mckenna Grace. The film arrives in theaters Nov. 11.
