As revealed in WandaVision, S.W.O.R.D.’s Maria Rambeau has taken on a similar role as Peggy Carter, former Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for WandaVision Episode 4, “We Interrupt This Program,” now streaming on Disney+.

WandaVision Episode 4, “We Interrupt This Program,” finally gave fans more information about S.W.O.R.D. (Sentient Weapon Observation and Response Department). Prior to this, the organization was only seen through small glimpses, but now viewers have a better understanding about what S.W.O.R.D. does, as well as its history. Along with confirming Monica Rambeau’s position with the government organization, it’s revealed that her mother, Maria “Photon” Rambeau, started S.W.O.R.D., taking on a similar role that Agent Peggy Carter had with S.H.I.E.L.D.

Maria Rambeau and Peggy Carter Are Military Women

Rambeau and Carter are both military women, with the former being a pilot for the United States Air Force; however, given the time period, she was not allowed to fly combat because she’s a woman. Instead, alongside Carol Danvers, she’d help Wendy Lawson, a.k.a. Mar-Vell, test her lightspeed engine with the hopes of ending wars, but she was unaware this was alien technology at the time.

Similarly, Carter was part of the British Royal Military during World War II, While she started out doing office work, as seen in Agent Carter, she’d eventually become a field agent, despite the odds. From there, she would be loaned out to the Strategic Scientific Reserve, where she’d help train the candidates for Project Rebirth, the program that would lead Steve Rogers to becoming Captain America.

For both women, they pursued military careers despite the systems working against them. They’d also end up working for programs that were much larger than anyone could’ve expected, with Rambeau getting sucked into the world of aliens and helping save the Skrull species. Meanwhile, Carter would be part of Captain America’s creation, which would have lasting impacts on the Marvel Cinematic Universe for decades. She’d also fight Hydra alongside him and the Howling Commandos.

Maria Rambeau and Peggy Carter Carry on Their Captains Legacies

Both Rambeau and Carter were close to two heroic captains in the MCU, Captain Marvel and Captain America. Rambeau and Danvers were close friends, with Danvers playing a huge role in Monica and Maria’s lives until she was taken by the Kree. Meanwhile, Carter saw Steve’s worth before he became Captain America, and the two shared romantic feelings for each other.

The two women would also lose their captains, with Rambeau being separated from Danvers twice. While the first time they’d separate was a tragic accident, the second time would be on better terms, with Danvers leaving to help the Skrulls find a new home. Meanwhile, Rambeau stayed on Earth with her daughter. After her reunion with Danvers and her brief experience in space, Rambeau would go on to found S.W.O.R.D., likely inspired by this adventure and her best friend. She may have started as a S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot, since Nick Fury mentioned in Captain Marvel how his organization could use someone like her, and from there she may have developed the connections to create S.W.O.R.D.; however, this is speculation. While what S.W.O.R.D. has done between its start and WandaVision is unclear, it appears they’ve been in the works for a while, with agents on Earth and in space.

Meanwhile, Rogers would sacrifice himself in Captain America: The First Avenger, ending any potential relationship between him and Carter until he’d travel back in time to be with her in Avengers: Endgame. However, Carter would live a full life without Rogers, continuing to work for the Strategic Scientific Reserve to stop Hydra and other threats. Despite several of her male coworkers talking down to her as a woman and believing she’s only an agent because of Captain America, her reputation and work would lead to Howard Stark asking her to run S.H.I.E.L.D in Marvel One-Shot: Agent Carter. She’d then act as the director for several decades, as seen in Ant-Man.

While Rambeau and Carter were crucial to their respective captain’s origin stories, and they were inspired by these heroes, Rambeau and Carter are more than supporting characters in the MCU. They’ve made names for themselves and have impacted the MCU for decades with their creations of S.W.O.R.D. and S.H.I.E.L.D., organizations that were originally intended to continue the work of these women and their captains; although, S.H.I.E.L.D. has failed to live up to Carter’s expectations with Hydra’s infiltration of the organization. Like Danvers and Rogers, Rambeau and Carter’s legacy is still influencing the events and characters of the MCU today.

Written by Jac Schaeffer and directed by Matt Shakman, WandaVision stars Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Paul Bettany as Vision, Randall Park as Agent Jimmy Woo, Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Kathryn Hahn as Agnes. New episodes air Fridays on Disney+.
