Stephen Amell posted a bloody behind-the-scenes video from Heels, hinting at his character embracing the wrestling tradition of a ‘crimson mask.’

Stephen Amell shared a behind-the-scenes video from Heels that hints at his character embracing a classic wrestling tradition.

“I can’t put my finger on it, but it sort of feels like a Thursday,” Amell said in a video that sees his face coated in blood — likely a reference to the “crimson mask” tradition in wrestling.

In professional wrestling and other combat sports, the “crimson mask” refers to when a competitor’s face is covered in blood. Bleeding in wrestling is typically achieved by “blading,” in which a wrestler cuts their own forehead with a concealed razor blade to provoke blood flow. There is also “hard way” bleeding, where a wrestler suffers a true injury in the ring. Though the context of the scene is unknown, it seems reasonable that this tradition would be addressed, given the show’s title.

Heels has had a rocky road to production, with Amell suffering an on-set injury and being diagnosed with COVD-19. However, the series’ ensemble has continued to grow, with former wrestler CM Punk joining the project.

Written by Michael Waldron, Heels stars Stephen Amell, Alison Luff, Alexander Ludwig, Chris Bauer, Allen Maldonado, James Harrison, Mary McCormack, David James Elliott and Joel Murray. The series has yet to receive a premiere date.
