Director Tim Burton recently praised Timothée Chalamet’s portrayal of Edgar Scissorhands during Cadillac’s Super Bowl LV commercial.

Stranger Things‘ Winona Ryder reprised her role as Kim from Edward Scissorhands in a Cadillac commercial during Super Bowl LV. In the ad, Kim has become a mother to Edgar Scissorhands (Timothée Chalamet), who bears an uncanny resemblance to his father, Edward. Director Tim Burton, who helmed the 1990 cult classic, helped develop the commercial.

“It’s rare when a work you’re proud of continues to live on and evolve with the times, even after 30 years,” Burton told the LA Times. “I’m glad to see Edgar coping with the new world!”

The director added, “I hope both fans and those being introduced to Edward Scissorhands for the first time enjoy it.” Chalamet’s debut appearance as Edgar was shared to his Instagram account, which received well over 3.5 million likes from fans.

Ryder also praised her co-star, saying, “I was really blown away by him and everyone’s work putting the character together. He is such a beautiful guy, so talented, so incredibly kind and unique.” The actor added, “Really the perfect person to embody that character.”

The Ryder and Chalamet commercial revolved around “the story of a boy with scissors for hands,” not unlike Edward. The spot saw Edgar’s successes, like slicing up a pineapple easily, and his struggles — such as accidentally puncturing a football with his bladed hands. The spot ended with Kim giving her son the gift of a hands-free, electric Cadillac LYRIQ, so he can finally drive by himself and still “make it home for dinner.”

Edward Scissorhands recently celebrated its 30th anniversary in December 2020. Throughout the past few decades, Edward’s character has grown to be iconic for individuals living with disabilities for how well it represents the painful and deep division of accessibility in the world and inside homes. Writer Caroline Thompson recently learned of this fact and said it brought her to tears how the film gave individuals “confidence and comfort and clarity.” Thompson stated, “That’s been one of the great joys of having contributed him to the culture.”

Directed by Tim Burton, Edward Scissorhands stars Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder, Dianne Wiest, Alan Arkin, Anthony Michael Hall and Vincent Price. The film is currently available to stream on Starz’s platform.
