Director Zack Snyder spoiled how Jared Leto’s Joker fits into the story for his upcoming R-rated, four-hour cut of the DCEU’s Justice League.
Justice League director Zack Snyder spoiled how Jared Leto’s Joker fits into his cut of the film.
Leto’s Joker will appear in a Zack Snyder’s Justice League sequence where Batman/Bruce Wayne has a vision of what will happen to the Earth if he and the League are unable to stop Steppenwolf and Darkseid from wreaking havoc on the planet. “The cool thing about the scene is that it’s Joker talking directly to Batman about Batman,” Snyder told Vanity Fair.
Snyder recently teased this Justice League scene by posting an image of Batman wearing the same outfit he had on in Batman v. Superman‘s Knightmare dream/vision sequence. “It’s Joker analyzing Batman about who he is and what he is,” Snyder explained. “That’s the thing I also felt like fans deserved from the DC Universe.”

Leto previously played the Joker in 2016’s Suicide Squad, but never came face-to-face with Ben Affleck’s Batman during the film’s theatrical cut. Batman v. Superman further alluded to the pair’s history in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) in a scene that indicated Joker had murdered Batman’s sidekick Robin. Snyder noted the two characters have yet to meet one-on-one in the franchise, adding, “It seemed uncool to me that we would make it all the way through this incarnation of Batman and Joker without seeing them come together.”
In ZACK SNYDER’S JUSTICE LEAGUE, determined to ensure Superman’s (Henry Cavill) ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) aligns forces with Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions. The task proves more difficult than Bruce imagined, as each of the recruits must face the demons of their own pasts to transcend that which has held them back, allowing them to come together, finally forming an unprecedented league of heroes. Now united, Batman (Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and The Flash (Ezra Miller) may be too late to save the planet from Steppenwolf, DeSaad and Darkseid and their dreadful intentions.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Ciarán Hinds as Steppenwolf, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor and J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon. The film will premiere exclusively on HBO Max on Thursday, March 18.
