HBO’s 30 Coins broke Father Vergara after he fled Rome, and thanks to the sinister Vatican, he’s been given a death sentence.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for 30 Coins Episode 6, “Holy War,” now airing on HBO.
HBO’s 30 Coins keeps pushing Father Vergara to the limit as he starts to realize how close the Cainites are to bringing about armageddon. He thought he could destroy them from within when he visited his old friend-turned-villain, Cardinal Fabio Santoro, in Rome, but he’s quickly realizing the power they wield is beyond compare.
This all has damaged Elena’s psyche back in Pedraza, killed Sandro, one of Vergara’s closest allies, and led to the priest barely escaping demonic attacks by the cult. Sadly, there’s no light at the end of the tunnel, either, as Vergara is now facing a death sentence.

Vergara fled Rome after Fabio sent a creature after him, heartbroken he couldn’t save Sandro. Vergara is seen in a war-torn area days later, hiding out and helping refugees. It turns out he’s relocated to Syria, clueless as to how to stop the apocalypse. He does get a call from Elena, though, and begins telling her he’s sorry for not informing her how the Judas coin would affect the Spanish town. But when she mentions Sandro’s death, Vergara realizes something’s up. No one knows about Sandro’s death but him and the cult, and when the camera cuts to the person on the phone, it’s Fabio, who’s using his supernatural abilities to mimic Elena’s voice.
Vergara smashes the phone and heads off to work, but he knows time’s running out. He meets up with his old mentor, who warns him that Fabio needs just one more coin. To make matters worse, no one can get to the Pope because he’s isolated, being surrounded by positive relics and holy energy from the time of Jesus Christ. The sadistic Fabio has tricked the Pope into thinking someone wants to kill him, so he’s clueless about what’s going on.
Minutes later, however, Vergara’s hospital is raided by the army and he’s taken to be tortured. They find his cross and beat him up, deeming him the enemy in the holy crusade. They drop him in a hole and inform him he’s going to be killed the next day with two other criminals.
Vergara’s left in the darkness, confident Fabio tracked his phone and sent the guys after him because the Cardinal knows Vergara doesn’t have the coin anymore. Foruntelaty, there is some hope because Vergara and Elena connect through dreams and he was able to send her a warning, meaning it’s possible he can send another message out.
Starring Eduard Fernández, Megan Montaner, Miguel Ángel Silvestre, Macarena Gómez, Pepón Nieto and Manolo Solo, 30 Coins airs Mondays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and is also streaming on HBO Max.
