Zack Snyder explained the design change behind Jared Leto’s Joker returning in the Snyder Cut of Justice League minus any of his infamous tattoos.
For his appearance in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Jared Leto’s Joker will not sport the tattoos he wore in Suicide Squad. Director Zack Snyder has now shed some light on what led to this design change.
“I would say that there’s been some water under the bridge. Who knows what’s happened,” Snyder told Vanity Fair. “I don’t know if he’s wearing makeup, I don’t know what’s happening. It’s hard to say exactly.”
Zack Snyder also explained that this iteration of Leto’s Joker will appear through a vision experienced by Batman. “The cool thing about the scene is that it’s Joker talking directly to Batman about Batman,” Snyder said. “It’s Joker analyzing Batman about who he is and what he is. That’s the thing I also felt like fans deserved from the DC Universe. That is to say, the Jared Leto Joker and the Ben Affleck Batman, they never really got together. It seemed uncool to me that we would make it all the way through this incarnation of Batman and Joker without seeing them come together.”

Jared Leto previously played the role of Joker in 2016’s Suicide Squad. Zack Snyder’s Justice League will be his second time portraying the character, though his incarnation of the character made a brief largely-offscreen appearence in Birds of Prey.
In ZACK SNYDER’S JUSTICE LEAGUE, determined to ensure Superman’s (Henry Cavill) ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) aligns forces with Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions. The task proves more difficult than Bruce imagined, as each of the recruits must face the demons of their own pasts to transcend that which has held them back, allowing them to come together, finally forming an unprecedented league of heroes. Now united, Batman (Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and The Flash (Ezra Miller) may be too late to save the planet from Steppenwolf, DeSaad and Darkseid and their dreadful intentions.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Ciarán Hinds as Steppenwolf, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor and J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon. The film arrives on HBO Max March 18.
