In the world of anime, characters come in all different types, from outgoing party animals to aloof tsundere characters who only show their true feelings at the right moment. Many rom-com and slice of life series drive their stories forward with these extroverted and introverted characters, and that may reflect in how they send text messages.
It’s the 21st century, and plenty of anime characters are using text messages and social media to stay connected with their friends, classmates, teammates, and more. Some anime characters (regardless of genre) are definitely the type to slide into a cozy and bold DM session, while others are either too aloof or too nervous to text back when they get a message. How do these anime characters measure up?
10 SLIDE INTO YOUR DM: Takumi Usui, The Ladies’ Man (Maid-Sama!)
Takumi Usui is the mysterious but uber-cool secondary character of this popular shojo series, and the few girls at his school are all enraptured by his easygoing charm and seemingly endless talents. Takumi is also rather outgoing and quick to make a friend or confront an enemy.
If Takumi ever got a text message or other online message from a friend or a charming girl, he’ll be quick to respond, either with a warm hello or “I’m sorry, but my heart belongs to another.” That “another,” naturally, is Misaki Ayuzawa.
9 LEAVE YOU ON READ: Ko Sakuragi, The Shy Gamer (Wotakoi)
The hit anime series Wotakoi is all about geek life and hidden romance, and while Hirotaka Nifuji is a major character, his little brother Naoya made a good friend in Ko Sakuragi, and this friendship quickly blossomed. Ko is rather shy, but she means well.
Ko is an unassuming gamer girl and a college student, and she can’t easily handle conversations with strangers, whether in person or by text. She’d leave a stranger on “read” for quite some time.
8 SLIDE INTO YOUR DM: Ichiya Vandalay Kotobuki, The Perfume Aficionado (Fairy Tail)
Ichiya is a wizard of the Blue Pegasus guild, and he considers himself quite the ladies’ man (as do his male guildmates). Ichiya is flamboyant and energetic, and he is quick to express his feelings for Erza Scarlet, even if she finds him rather annoying.
If Ichiya had access to modern tech, he would love to use apps like Tinder and Instagram all day long, and he would eagerly respond to any message that an attractive girl would send him. He wouldn’t dare keep them waiting.
7 LEAVE YOU ON READ: Olivier Armstrong, Briggs Commander (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood)
Major-General Olivier Armstrong is the eldest Armstrong child, and she acts the part. Olivier is stern, demanding, and a strong believer in tough love, and this has endeared her to all her officers and soldiers in Fort Briggs. They know that she has an iron will, and none dare cross it.
Olivier isn’t the type to sit and chat, though she will indulge people if it’s for the sake of a mission. Olivier would largely ignore texts and other digital messages from friends and associates, even from her brother Alex, and wait for them to have the guts to speak up in person. She needs to look them in the eye.
6 SLIDE INTO YOUR DM: Keigo Asano, Ichigo’s Wild Friend (Bleach)
Ichigo Kurosaki certainly makes some odd friends at school, and that includes the outgoing Keigo Asano, a wannabe ladies’ man. Keigo hardly cares about clubs or tests at all; he’d rather impress some girls, and he seems utterly tireless in this pursuit.
Like Ichiya, Keigo is the type to make accounts on all kinds of flirty apps online, and chat up just about every girl who shows the slightest interest. If he gets a message from a potential date, he’ll respond to her ASAP.
5 LEAVE YOU ON READ: Kyo Sohma, The Boy With A Cat Spirit Inside Of Him (Fruits Basket)
Even among the miserable and lonely members of the Sohma family, Kyo Sohma has it rough. He is widely disliked and feared due to the housecat spirit housed inside him, and he doesn’t even get along with his cousins. Only his martial arts teacher is a valued friend of his.
Kyo would ignore text messages from just about anyone who sends them, from Yuki Sohma or Shigure down to Kyo’s classmates from school. He might make an exception for Tohru, though, who has a gentle soul that Kyo finds alluring.
4 SLIDE INTO YOUR DM: Jiraiya, The Pervy Sage (Naruto)
Jiraiya is widely known for two things: his mastery of sage jutsu and his incredible fondness for attractive women (much to lady Tsunade’s and even Naruto’s exasperation). Jiraiya is a tireless womanizer, and he has the charisma to pull it off, despite his strange outfit and headband.
If Jiraiya lived in a modern setting with cell phones, Tinder, and Snapchat, he’d be all over that and flaunt himself across cyberspace to wow the ladies. He would eagerly respond to any DM from a beautiful girl, no doubt, and see where it takes him.
3 LEAVE YOU ON READ: Annie Leonhart, The Titan Shifter (Attack On Titan)
Annie Leonhart was a warrior of the Marley Empire, being entrusted with the great power of the Female Titan. She did her best to accomplish the mission, but got herself captured near the end of Season 1. Until then, she was utterly aloof and humorless, even to her fellow Marley warriors.
Eren Yeager and his friends quickly realize that Annie is not here to make friends, and she tends to keep to herself and stare into the distance with those cold eyes of hers. In a modern setting, she wouldn’t bother saving anyone in her contacts list or responding to DMs. Can’t everyone just leave her alone?
2 SLIDE INTO YOUR DM: Joseph Joestar, The Slick Hero (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure)
Joseph Joestar has always been, for better or for worse, a skirt-chaser, and he’s always eager to make a new friend or rival to keep his life interesting. He enjoyed his fierce rivalry with Caesar Zeppeli, and he quickly fell for the lovely Suzie Q.
Joseph also had a fling with Tomoko Higashikata. All this proves that Joseph is an outgoing fellow who loves to connect with others, and he’d respond to any DM for a nice chat.
1 LEAVE YOU ON READ: Shota Aizawa, AKA Eraser Head (My Hero Academia)
Shota Aizawa goes by the name Eraser Head, and he’s the grouchy but well-meaning homeroom teacher of Class 1-A at the U.A. school. Aizawa doesn’t give praise easily, and he rarely connects with other people. There’s no doubt he acts the same way in cyberspace.
Aizawa would barely bother to have a cell phone, and he would probably only text a few work associates to get the latest intel for work while neglecting the idea of texting some friends or sharing funny GIFs. He’d be hard-pressed to respond to a DM at all.
