As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to change the world, people continue to adapt. Pokémon GO is a great example of still having fun while being safe.

For about a year now, the world has been plunged into a state of uncertainty. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced people to do things a bit more cautiously, which has also applied to game developers. Pokémon GO is a mobile game created by Niantic that allows fans to walk in the real world to catch Pokémon. Its success has even spawned console spin-offs and so much more for the brand. It has even found ways to stay safe while having fun in lockdown.

Pokémon GO, by nature, fosters interaction and exploration with fellow trainers who love to discover the world around them. When the COVID-19 pandemic was at its peak, this caused many issues for people who wanted to escape with the game and even affected the company that created it. It proved to be one of the biggest challenges the social game had ever faced.

To compensate for the mandatory lack of interaction, Niantic created new COVID-19 rules. These rules allowed people to explore and do so safely, even encouraging players to remain close to home. This was a success for the time that it was implemented, and now Pokémon GO has found various other ways to keep players active, social and safe.

The game has continued to update its customizable features for a trainer’s look in the past year. This has included new clothing items and other accessories. It still allows for freedom of expression while some people are staying at home. For those that can venture outside, the game is still doing its monthly community day. The community days are when trainers can obtain a special Pokémon and participate in limited time events.

Recent updates have also added new tasks and challenges so that people always have something to do in the game. These challenges can either take a small amount of time or become a full-blown journey, depending on how immersed a player wants to be. Not all of them are easy, but they are always a blast to participate in and still allow player interaction, even if it is socially distanced.

The Pokémon franchise has seen more and more Pokémon added to the franchise with each new game installment. Because of this, Niantic has been taking their time bringing in each new generation of Pokémon to players. Not only has this allowed for more reasons to enjoy the sun and fresh air, but it also gives younger players who are unable to do a lot something to look forward to.

While safety isn’t always guaranteedPokémon GO has been doing its part to show the players they care about their safety. While Niantic can’t control the state of the world, they have been doing their best to make sure that people stay social, to some degree, during lockdown and still encourage players to catch ’em all….safely.
