Motion character posters for Sub-Zero and Kano revealed the trailer premiere date for Mortal Kombat.
Motion character posters for Kano and Sub-Zero revealed the premiere date for the trailer of the upcoming Mortal Kombat film.
The posters were shared by the Mortal Kombat Twitter page, where the new trailer will also premiere on Thursday, Feb. 18 at 12:00 pm ET/ 9:00 am PT. This is about a month after the first photos from the film were released, which provided fans with a look at Sub-Zero, Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Kano, Major Jackson “Jax” Briggs and Sonya Blade, along with new character Cole Young.
The trailer won’t be the first footage of the film released. A promo hyping HBO Max‘s same-day premiere strategy features Sonya Blade speaking the words “It’s an invitation… to Mortal Kombat” as she points to a wall full of photos, as well as shots of Sub-Zero in action. The film is a part of the HBO Max same-day premiere lineup, and will debut in theaters and on HBO Max on April 16. Other films that have released this way include Wonder Woman 1984, The Little Things and Judas and the Black Messiah.
In “Mortal Kombat,” MMA fighter Cole Young, accustomed to taking a beating for money, is unaware of his heritage — or why Outworld’s Emperor Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, an otherworldly Cryomancer, to hunt Cole down. Fearing for his family’s safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces Major who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with. Soon, he finds himself at the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm, who grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark. Here, Cole trains with experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao and rogue mercenary Kano, as he prepares to stand with Earth’s greatest champions against the enemies of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe. But will Cole be pushed hard enough to unlock his arcana — the immense power from within his soul — in time to save not only his family, but to stop Outworld once and for all?
Directed by Simon McQuoid and produced by James Wan, Mortal Kombat stars Lewis Tan, Ludi Lin, Chin Han, Jessica McNamee, Hiroyuki Sanada, Joe Taslim, Mehcad Brooks, Josh Lawson, Sisi Stringer, Elissa Cadwell and Tadanobu Asano. The film arrives in theaters and on HBO Max April 16, 2021.
