Eternals director Chloé Zhao says Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s 2015 film The Revenant inspired the action sequences of her upcoming Marvel Studios film.

Eternals director Chloé Zhao says the action sequences of her upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film were informed by director Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s 2015 film The Revenant.

In an interview with The Playlist, Zhao explained that multiple films inspired her vision for Marvel Studios’ Eternals, much like how director Wong Kar-wai’s Happy Together inspired her new film Nomadland. “I had to assign a few because of the scale of the film. But I think for the action sequences, which I just had such a great time working on with such a great team, I wanted to reference The Revenant a lot,” she said.

The Revenant is a film that I love so much,” Zhao continued, “And I think we’ve watched The Revenant so many times, every meeting when we come to our action sequences because most of those sequences are shot on location. And I love how immersive and the way how you feel the dash and sequences in The Revenant. It’s definitely a film that we aspire to. And Marvel really, really supported that idea and really went for it.”

Set in 1823, The Revenant follows American frontiersman Hugh Glass, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, who must utilize his survival skills to find his way back to civilization after being mauled by a bear. The film won Best Director, Best Actor and Best Cinematography at the 88th Academy Awards.

Zhao’s Eternals follows members of the eponymous race of ancient “ancient aliens,” who “have been living on Earth in secret for thousands of years. Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, an unexpected tragedy forces them out of the shadows to reunite against mankind’s most ancient enemy, The Deviants.” The film was originally slated for release on Nov. 6, 2020, though was delayed twice as a result of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. It is currently slated to arrive in theaters this coming November.

Directed by Chloé Zhao, Eternals stars Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Angelina Jolie as Thena, Barry Keoghan as Druig and Kit Harington as Dane Whitman/Black Knight. The film arrives in theaters Nov. 5.
